lesson 2 > exercise 6. > LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLE SENTENCES

AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW:

I’ve worked in two different schools.

I’ve been working here for six months.

These sentences describe:

actions that started in the past and continue to the present.

actions that started in the past and are now finished.

I’ve worked in two different schools.

I’ve been working here for six months.

Sentence 1 uses the present perfect simple. We use this to describe:

quantities

durations

I’ve worked in two different schools.

I’ve been working here for six months.

Sentence 2 uses the present perfect continuous. We use this to describe:

quantities

durations

I’ve worked in two different schools.

I’ve been working here for six months.

There are however some times when the present perfect simple and present perfect continuous have the same meaning.
For example:

We have lived here for five years.

We have been living here for five years.

In these sentences, the meaning is the same.

I’ve worked in two different schools.

I’ve been working here for six months.

Also, remember that we cannot use the continuous with stative verbs. These are verbs that describe a state, such as like, love, or understand.

I have understood the idea.

I have been understanding the idea.
